Add years to your life and life to your years

Active aging is still an infant concept in fast-paced Singapore and “changing society’s perception of what it means to be old” is no easy task for the Council for Third Age. This year, they are launching an entire festival to bring seniors into the limelight. The first of which was Active Aging Carnival, launched by Minister Lim Boon Heng on 23 Aug 2008 at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza.

Throughout the day, the young at heart played, drove, sang and performed their hearts out. You could not help but realize that age is just a number as these normally gentle senior citizens zipped around, completing their adventure trail cards. Among groups of friends, there was no less competitiveness and camaraderie as their school-going grandchildren, nieces or nephews.

Exhibitors at the booths educated the public on the latest technological or research breakthroughs to enhance health, so they can go on living out active lives. To keep them up with the momentum throughout the day, Ensure Life provided much needed nutritious refreshment – Ensure Life Vanilla and Strawberry powder were blended with crunchy green apples into a delicious smoothie.

As night fell, people lingered on as nostalgia filled the air, reminiscing about the open-air theatres of yester-years. Performers belted out golden oldies and the audience sang along with much gusto. Old movies were screened till the quietness of the night took over.
