Abbott Mum Sharing Series – ToleranceWith reliable child-caring support and a nutritious baby formula milk, it's little wonder Sabrina Gan can afford to stay relaxed about motherhood. As a mutual funds investment analyst, Sabrina Gan, 28, understands the importance of assessing statistics and information to make sound investment decisions for her clients. It is perhaps this same drive to excel in her responsibilities that led her to choose Similac Follow-On formula milk for her one-year-old son, Kaiden Ng. When Kaiden was several months old, he developed severe rash all over his face and body. He was subsequently diagnosed with eczema, a form of inflammation of the skin. Says Sabrina, whose husband works in the banking industry, "It was a traumatic time for my husband and I, especially after the doctor told us there is no cure for eczema. Initially, we also had no idea what we could do to help alleviate Kaiden's condition. So we followed the doctor's advice to bathe him with special cleansing oil and ensure he avoids trigger factors such as dusty enviroments and soft toys. "I also breastfed him until he was nine months old and even after that, I chose a formula milk, Similac Follow-On, which I was confident would be best for my child. It has a unique 100 per cent vegetable fat blend, which helps support gastrointestinal tolerance and renders a baby's stools soft for greater comfort. Incidentally, he didn't like the taste of the earlier brands we fed him." A stronger digestive system means Kaiden absorbs and retains the nutrients in the formula better. He is stronger and healthier." Otherwise, Sabrina says she prefers to take a laidback approach where parenting is concerned. Although she sometimes finds it a challenge to squeeze into her 12-hour workdays more time with Kaiden, she refuses to become an over-anxious mom, which is a breeze, since her mother-in-law and a domestic helper look after the boy when she is at the office. "I think it's important for working mothers to have a good support system. Kaiden being my first child, I'm thankful that my mother-in-law and my maid chip in to help because I have no experience at all," Sabrina adds. "So I can be a bit more cool and less protective, and enjoy him more as he grows up. I usually feel tired after work on weekdays, so I try to spend more time with him during the weekend." For instance, I accompany him to gym class, bring him swimming and watch education videos with him. If he's interested, we go through reading cards and even books. It's important that Kaiden enjoys the learning process and it gives me great satisfaction to know that he is happy and healthy. My greatest wish is that he becomes a confident and independent adult." Look out for upcoming issues of July – August 2008 Abbott Family Ties, where more mothers will share their own experiences on having smart, healthy, strong and happy children.
