"Don't worry. Be Sure" Parenting Seminar.More than 500 mothers and fathers attended the Pediasure Complete, “Don’t worry, Be Sure” Parenting Seminar for concerned parents at Raffles City Convention Centre on 14th April 2007. Parents gathered to listen to Dr Benny Kerzner, renowned Consultant Paediatrician from Children’s National Medical Center, Washington DC, with his pet topic “Growth and my picky eater, should I be concerned?”. Dr Kerzner’s fundamental feeding rule is that parents should control the three Ws; where, when, what to eat and the child should control the amount. Parents should start setting basic rules on feeding when the child is young and they should be consistent. Following Dr Kerzner, Dr Ong Eng Keow, Consultant Paediatrician and Neonatologist, from Singapore Baby and Child clinic, Thomson Medical Centre, gave parents his invaluable tips to cope with illness. His take home message was that parents should be CONFIDENT – Common, Oral-faecal / airborne infections, Number of infections can be high, Fever itself is not always bad, Immunisations may help, Don’t panic, Enquire, Note other signs and symptoms and Take your child to doctor if concerned. Last but not least, Dr Ng Koon Hock, Consultant Psychiatrist, from The Paediatric Clinic, Thomson Medical Centre ended the day’s seminar with “Dare to discipline – a nurturing approach to parenting toddlers and preschoolers. He shared with all parents that content should account for 7% of how they communicate with their children, tone of voice for 38% and most importantly, non-verbals for 55%. There are 3 approaches to disciplining a child: top-down approach, bottom-up approach and mixed approach. Ultimately, the right mix depends on experience; understanding and knowledge of the parent; urgency of discipline; the cooperation and independence of the child. At the end of the seminar, parents were able to address their questions to the speakers. Thomson Medical Centre launched their Junior Angels Club@Thomson for children 0 months to 6 years at the seminar with a big bang and lots of confetti. Over 100 children were entertained by a magician clown and juggler. While their parents attended the parenting seminar the kids also enjoyed the pyramid puzzle game, balloon designs, free portraits, cookie art, sand art and books.
