Abbott conducted "Take Charge of Your Diabetes – Diabetes College 2008", an informative workshop on diabetes management, on 10th May 2008 at the Pines. There was a good turnout of 180 participants who gained valuable advice from doctors, podiatrists, nurses and nutritionists on managing diabetes.

Key learnings from the workshop:

• What is diabetes and how nutrition can play an important part in glycemic control for better diabetes management
• Benefits of blood glucose (BG) monitoring and how to self test using blood glucose (BG) meters
• Importance of diabetic foot care to prevent amputations through wound management and footcare counselling
• Focus of a diabetic diet on carbohydrate counting as part of a healthy balanced diet for living well with diabetes

The participants were also able to find out more about their blood glucose levels and suitable products for diabetes management such as Glucerna SR, Optium Xceed Meter and QV heel balm cream during the tea break and lunch. At the end of the event, each participant received a Certificate of Attendance for taking the 1st step to better manage their diabetes by participating in "Take Charge of Your Diabetes – Diabetes College 2008"!

As diabetes continues to be a widely prevalent health condition in Singapore, it is important to be educated about lifestyle changes such as proper nutrition and self-monitoring. Overall diabetes care and management empowers diabetics to take charge of the disease and lead fulfilling lives.
