QUESTION 5
Dear Doctor,
My son is now 15 months old. He has started eating rice but is eating very little. He weighs only 9kg. Is that underweight for him? Also, how many hours of sleep a day is sufficient for a child of his age?
Lin Shumei

ANSWER:
Dear Shumei,
If you look in Aloysius’ health booklet, there are several growth charts at the back. Start by plotting his weight, height and head circumference on these charts (your doctor should have done this during his routine follow-up). For a 15 month old baby boy, Aloysius’ current weight of 9 kg means he is on the 10th centile. This means that he is below average (for our Singapore babies statistics year 2000), but still within the normal range.
If Aloysius has not shown an increase in weight, height and head circumference over the past 6 months, then it is advisable for you to visit your doctor for a full assessment. You might also like to see a dietician or substitute his milk with high caloric formulas like Pediasure.
A 15 month old child usually needs a total of 10 to 12 hours of sleep per day.

QUESTION 6
Dear Doctor,
My girl is 3 years old and has a black mark on the white of her eye. She has had it since she was a baby. However, her vision seems to be sharp and good. Is there any cause for concern in the long term? Regards, Jacqueline

ANSWER:
Dear Jacqueline,
Unfortunately, I am unable to comment on the black mark on her eye without actually seeing it. My suggestion is to bring her to a paediatric eye specialist for a full assessment. Usually, marks on the white bit of the eyes (also known as sclera) are of no consequence.
