You Speak "Do you use traditional herbal remedies and supplement as part of your diabetes management plan?"

Diabetes Management Plan Result

Based on a poll of 74 Abbott readers
Start Date: 21st February 2011 | End Date: 29th April 2011

I am sure you have heard this before!

  • Drink bitter gourd juice and your diabetes will go away.
  • Eat up the cinnamon, it has insulin-like properties.
  • Chew on fenugreek seeds to lower blood sugar.
  • Eat the leaves of the ginkgo biloba plant to improve blood flow.
  • Take your vitamins everyday to counter diabetic neuropathy.

These dietary tips are not figments of fantasy, but beliefs touted often by well-meaning friends and family members that come from deep rooted Asian cultures or lay perceptions that believe food is medicine. While many of us have progressed on to accept evidence based medicine that all treatment must be scientifically proven, a few lingering beliefs still come into play in our day to day management of chronic conditions such as diabetes.

We asked and you told us. 35% of the poll respondents said that they do use herbal remedies and supplements all the time and another 21% do so some of the time.

Here's the take...

As long as these herbals products do no harm and have a history of use, they may be used as part of your holistic management of diabetes. But, always, talk to your doctor about them.

When it comes to supplements, if they are regular vitamins and minerals, they may be able to fill in some nutrient gaps in your diet. Once again, there is no benefit in consuming large amounts. In fact, in excess, nutrients can be harmful.

So, is there a role for a Diabetes Specific Nutritional Formula in your diet? It all depends...

Diabetes Specific Nutritional Formula (DSNF) - What is it?

DSNF is a complete and balanced nutrition supplement beverage, specially designed to meet the recommendations of a diabetic diet in terms of macronutrient (carbohydrate, protein, fat and fibre) and micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) recommendations to help patients with diabetes to achieve better post meal blood glucose values.

How can you use it?

DSNF can be used as a part of a meal or a meal replacement. It is convenient as all you need to do is add water to powder, stir well and drink. You can be rest assured that your blood sugar will stay within the range. You definitely will appreciate that very much as you do worry about picking up your meals and snacks everyday - worrying if the portion is right and if your blood sugar will stay in control.

What benefit can you expect?

DSNF is designed to help individuals with diabetes achieve better post meal blood glucose readings and fewer blood sugar swings when substituted for the same calories in a regular meal plan. It is just a simple way of making your diabetic diet a little easier to achieve.

Is there proof?

DSNF from Abbott Glucerna, is backed by 20 years of clinical studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
