Dear Abigail,
Diarrhoea is a common childhood illness. When babies and children have diarrhoea, the stool contains more water than normal. So, if your baby seems to be passing loose or watery stools, she may be having diarrhoea. You may have also noticed that your little one seems to be experiencing some tummy discomfort and is passing more smelly stools.
Diarrhoea is defined as:
a) the passage of 3 or more liquid stools per day, or
b) the passage of stools more frequently than is normal for the individual.
If a baby is below one year of age, parents should consult the baby's pediatrician at the onset of a diarrhoea episode. For an older baby or child, the following symptoms should alert a parent to consult the doctor. If your child has:
