You Speak, "How do you get your baby to sleep?"

We hardly have difficulties getting Ashley, our 15-month-old baby to bed. From as young as 5 months, we make it a habit for her to be in bed by 8.30pm. We spend time every night to play with her before bedtime, because we hardly have time for her while my husband and I are at work. I will leave the night light on, sing lullabys and pat her, so she knows it is time for bed. She dozes off in less than 15 minutes. I believe we have to introduce a routine to our child from young.

I find breastfeeding is the most effective way to make my two babies sleep. For the eldest child, I just give him his blanket and it works.

Pauline Lim Keng Choo, mother of 3

It is easy to make my boy sleep. I usually tell him what activities are in store for him the next day, so he has to sleep early and get up early. His bolster and water will be placed next to him. When he is naughty, he wants me to lie down with him. When he was younger, I sang songs to lull him to sleep. He falls asleep within 5 – 10 minutes.

Fion Lim, mother of 1

My baby girl sleeps in her own room from the day she came home. That helped her to feel comfortable and safe as she is familiar with the surroundings. We established a routine of bath, storytelling and music. We do not pat or rock her to sleep, but stay with her till she sleeps. On days when she gets cranky, we pat her on her back to reassure her.

Humming softly and putting my palm on her chest to ease her doubts

I generally put my 7-month-old son to bed by singing. Sometimes he also hums along with us sometime after I switch on the piano roll music which he likes a lot.

Brinda Devi, mother of 2

Nurse to sleep :)

Elaine, mother of 1

Give my child a regular sleep routine. When she was younger and lighter I would carry her on my shoulders and pat her to sleep. Now that she is heavier, I have trained her to sleep on the bed but I will still pat her now and again.

Lim Poh Choo, mother of 1

After my son's feed, I pat his back and let him sleep, or I read a book to him before bedtime.

Rathi Pillai, mother of 1

Stroke the baby gently on the arms or thighs then hum some music.

Chua Yen Cheng, mother of 3

I usually sing or hum a lullaby to my baby, or any sweet and soothing melody that sends her to dreamland… her favourite melody is "twinkle twinkle little star".

Asvinder Kaur, mother of 1

Normally my children sleep easily after a bottle. At other times, I would stroke their foreheads; perhaps this has the effect of adding weight to the eyelids. Of course I would first make the room as conducive as possible for sleep, by drawing the blinds and shutting the door. I would also feign sleep myself sometimes by taking slow, deep, and audible breaths :)

Jacqueline, mother of 3

I bathe my baby regardless the time of the day; He/she needs to feel comfortable before bedtime. I make sure my baby smells nice and looks comfortable to go to bed.

Connie Leong

We usually have a routine – bath, bedtime story, then catch up on the day's events before sleep.

Abigail Cheng, mother of 3

Find a good piece of instrumental music CD, and play it as part of sleep routine during bedtime. The baby will recognise the music and associate with sleep. Do not play the CD on other occasions except bedtime.

Lynn, mother of 1

My son Dylan normally asks for a bottle of milk before bedtime. On days when he throws tantrums, I'll turn on some music, and get him to choose a CD of his liking. I'll also greet him good night, or give him a goodnight kiss.

Chung Wai Yoke, mother of 2
