Abbott Affiliates in Singapore Gather To Support the Environment

World Tree Day was celebrated on September 27, 2009 and Abbott in Singapore made sure it supported for this important occasion by holding a tree planting event in the grounds of AMS (Abbott Manufacturing Singapore). Eleven trees, one for each Abbott operating group in Singapore, were planted.

The eleven groups represented included Abbott Diabetes Care, Abbott Diagnostics Division, Abbott International, Abbott Medical Optics, Abbott Nutrition International, Abbott Nutrition Research and Development, Abbott Nutrition Supply Chain, Area Human Resources, Abbott Vascular, Global Pharmaceutical Operations and Global Pharmaceutical Research and Development.

The event began with all participants assembling in the AMS cafeteria for a hearty breakfast before getting down to digging and planting the trees. Before planting commenced, Pat Cooper, the Site Director at AMS, gave an insightful introduction to World Tree Day and the importance of reducing the impact of climate change and global warming. The United Nations Environmental Programme has set a goal of planting seven billion trees, one for every person on the planet, by the end of 2009. The tree planting event at AMS was both a practical and a symbolic way of supporting this goal.

Each Abbott group was assigned a tree to plant. All the trees were of the species Terminalia mantaly, also known as the umbrella tree, which is endemic of Madagascar and grows well in Singapore.

The event proved to be a success and the participants left the site feeling a sense of achievement and satisfaction that they had played a small part in improving the environment for future generations and increasing the awareness of the problems associated with climate change.
