Family Science Inspires Children in Singapore Once Again
Science is the key to our future! However, the past years have shown a faltering interest in science among youths. The world perpetually needs people who are well-trained in science and technology to boost innovations which further enhance the livelihood of humans.
Abbott is committed to doing its part to address this challenge by introducing students to the world of scientific discovery through hands-on science learning, designed to spark young people's interest in science. By fostering discovery and invention at a young age, Abbott hopes to encourage the students to pursue a career in science and emerge as future leaders in the scientific arena.
Abbott Singapore, with support from its philanthropic arm, Abbott Fund and the Science Centre Singapore launched two science education programs in Singapore in 2010 – Operation Discovery and Family Science. This year, our dedicated Abbott scientists continue their legacy to engage children and their families in exciting science activities.
Mr. Chadi Chahine, General Manager of Abbott Laboratories Singapore, graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour together with his son, with an inspiring opening speech. A total of 75 children, accompanied by 70 adults and 40 volunteers from Abbott participated in Family Science Day, held at the Singapore Science Centre on 17 September 2011.
Through the Family Science programme, we hope to instill a love for science as well as the spirit of exploration and discovery among young children in primary school. The activities were designed such that they can easily be performed in the comfort of their own homes, without the need for fancy materials or instruments. The objective is to help children realise that science is more than just a subject in school, but a part of everyday life. More importantly, the programme aims to encourage parents' active involvement in their child's education, to trigger the child's curiosity. The "eureka" moment in the child's face was priceless, as described by some of the participating parents.
"My family really enjoyed the event. After the event, my kids were still excited with the experiments and fun they had during the activity. It is a truly fantastic experience for all of us. Thanks to the organising committee and the volunteers who put in a great effort to make this event successful."
"Our behalf of Mr Soon Woo Sin, Vice-Principal of Ngee Ann Primary School, and Ms Jane Koe, Chairperson of Parent Support Group (PSG), I would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to you and your team for your hard work in putting together the Abbott Family Science Programme on 17 September 2011. The parents and pupils really enjoyed themselves!"
"This is my second year participating in the Abbott Family Science Event and I must say the event is very well-run. The experiments are easy to follow and are very fascinating indeed."
With these programmes, Abbott is dedicated to deliver its "Promise for Life", not only through science and innovation, but also through its allegiance to the future of science.
