Visit to Bright Hill Evergreen Home – An afternoon of karaoke, magic, and Bingo fun

Bright Hill Evergreen Home is situated in the idyllic grounds of Senja Road. On 18 October 2011, 30 Abbott employees visited the Home to spend a special afternoon with 180 elderly residents.

The weather was perfect as we gathered at the Home in the afternoon to be briefed. We helped the nurses to usher the residents in wheelchairs to the common hall to begin the afternoon activities. We kick-started the afternoon with a "Face Changing" performance (变脸), a form of ancient Chinese dramatic arts, where the performer dons many vividly coloured masks and changes the mask at a blink of an eye. The residents were captivated! It was a first for them and for us too!

Abbott staff also helped to distribute snacks, food, and drinks to residents at tea time, together with the help of the nurse caregivers. This was quickly followed by an impromptu karaoke session by 2 colleagues to get residents to hum along to the familiar hits of Teresa Teng, a legendary songbird.

We also had one of our own with tricks up his sleeve literally, performing a magic show segment, to the delight of residents, nurses, AND our employees! He performed with aplomb to applause and laughter all round.

Next up: Bingo session, a favourite activity with the residents, who are more familiar with the rules of the game than us. It was a riotous 20 minutes as residents raced to form a complete line on their Bingo sheet, to win freebies!

The afternoon drew to a close, as we walked along the wards to deliver goodie bags to the residents and wishing them well. The smiles on the faces of the residents and staff at Bright Hill and the Abbott staff was the true witness to the deep joy that was experienced by all through the precious afternoon spent in giving, caring and sharing.
