The nutritional needs of the growing child are provided by food that supply the important nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Children aged 1 to 6 years old generally require approximately 1000 calories per day and children 6 years to 10 years require 1300 calories per day for their energy and growth requirements. By missing or not completing their meals, children tend to lose out on the vital nutrients essential for growth and repair of their body tissues. Why are fats important?

Each serving of PediaSure contains a balanced proportion of carbohydrates, protein and fat (100% vegetable oils) comprising of 20% MCTs, vitamins and minerals. Fat is important in a diet as it:

• provides energy for the body
• provides essential nutrients needed for the normal growth and development
• helps in the absorption of essential vitamins A, D, E and K
• helps in the formation of cell membranes
• provides insulation for body warmth

Compared to adults, children need a larger proportion of fat in the diet. Children generally need 30% - 50% of their calories from fat. Fat in the diet are able to spare the body from using protein for energy. By sparing the protein in the diet from being used as an energy source, children can use the protein they eat to build up their muscles and cells for growth.

What are MCTs and why are they important?

PediaSure is specially formulated with 100% vegetable oil comprising of 20% MCTs. MCTs are medium chain triglycerides which can be found naturally in foods. Medium chain triglycerides are short chain fatty acids which are rapidly absorbed by the intestinal tract. MCTs are rapidly absorbed by the body as they do not need any action by the intestinal juices to be broken down into smaller particles. Therefore, PediaSure is better digested and better absorbed as MCTs are able to provide children with a quick source of energy for catch up growth and for physical activity.

Does PediaSure contain calcium for my child's bone development?

PediaSure contains calcium, phosphorus, Vitamin D and iron in a balanced formula to maximize the growth potential of your child.

Calcium is required by children for skeletal growth. Because calcium absorption and utilization are affected by the phosphorus levels found in the diet, PediaSure contains the recommended calcium to phosphorus ratio of 1.2:1, which is necessary to support the skeletal growth of young children by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition.

My child is sensitive to lactose, can my child tolerate PediaSure?

Lactose intolerance is a common food intolerance among Asian children where the enzyme lactase is not present in adequate amounts to digest the lactose found in cow's milk. In lactose intolerance, the most common symptoms are diarrhea, large curdle vomit, or stomach irritability. PediaSure with MCTs is formulated with low levels of lactose and is suitable for children sensitive to lactose or lactose intolerant as they may find it easier to tolerate PediaSure compared to other milk beverages.

What flavours are PediaSure available in?

PediaSure powder is available in 2 flavours: Vanilla and Chocolate, both in 400 gm and 900 gm tins. The PediaSure liquid drink (240ml) is available in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavors.
